Option 3.1: Search for Food

Context:

So, you have decided to go in search of edible flora, a wise choice dear pioneer. You trudge through rows and rows of the same trees, exhausted and thirsty by now, but just as you decide to turn back you spot what you think is a different kind of flora in the distance. Excitement replaces your fatigue as you make your way to this new tree. It’s not much unlike the trees you’re accustomed to, except that its leaves are a shade of deep blue. Hanging on its branches are what appears to be fruits of some sort: round at the base and tubular near the top. You pick one of the ground and decide to take it back to the craft to analyse.

On your way back, you feel like you have a miniscule idea of the forest’s layouts now.

Reward(s): +1 Geography

Back on the craft now, and after a refreshing meal, you sit down in front of the main console. Setting the fruit down on the scanner, you wait for the results to come in.

“Scanner integrity compromised.”

Well that’s awkward. You inspect the scanner from all sides, but can’t seem to find anything wrong with it. Seems like you’ll have to take it apart to see what’s up.

Challenge: Fix the scanner

Reward(s): +1 Hardware, +1 Biology; Unlocks Bioengineering

Acquired Blue Fruit

Seems like the fruit is poisonous. Well don’t lose hope yet pioneer, I’m sure you’ll find some use for it soon enough, or at least find a way to make it edible. And you do get to name it, you’re the first human to have found it after all. For that matter, why don’t you go ahead and think of a name for your future settlement instead?

Option 3.2 Search for Water

Context:

So, you have decided to go in search of anything remotely resembling water, a wise choice dear pioneer. You trudge through rows and rows of the same trees, exhausted and thirsty by now, but just as you decide to turn back your ears are assaulted by a barrage of beeps. Taking out your hand-nav, you notice that the water detector is flashing.

Excitement replaces your fatigue as you make your way to where the nav is leading. In the middle of the forest you find a small stream bubbling through the convoluted roots jutting into its path. There is one problem however: the liquid is purple.

No matter, dear pioneer, all you need to do is take a sample of the liquid and analyse it back on the craft.

On your way back, you feel like you have a miniscule idea of the forest’s layouts now.

Reward(s): +1 Geography

Back on the craft now, and after a refreshing meal, you sit down in front of the main console. Setting the sample down on the scanner, you wait for the results to come in. … … … “Sample consumable after purification.”

Elated, you rush over to the storage room in search for the mobile water extractor. You find it easily enough, and it hardly requires any setting up. Seems like you’ll have to adjust its settings to match the liquid sample.

Challenge: Configure Mobile-Extractor

Reward(s): +1 Software, +1 Chemistry; Unlocks Water Harvesting

Acquired Mobile-Extractor

You pop the purple sample into the purifier, and out comes a stream of clear liquid. You set it down on the table, deciding to taste test it when you’re feeling more courageous. You now need to think of a way to get a steady supply of this purple liquid, otherwise what’s the point? Don’t despair dear pioneer, we’re sure you’ll do it! Till then you can take pleasure in the realisation that you get to name this liquid, you’re the first human to have found it after all. For that matter, why don’t you go ahead and think of a name for your future settlement instead?

Option 3.3: Search for a Cure to Boredom on a Strange Planet (Not really, but we don’t know why else you’d want to do this)

Context:

So, you have decided to go in search of… Well who knows what you’ll find, a wise choice dear pioneer, very much like the pioneers of old. You trudge through rows and rows of the same trees, exhausted and thirsty by now, and then finally decide to turn back.

Except you can’t.

Why?

Your hand-nav ran out of juice, didn’t it?

Well don’t be mad at us, dear pioneer, you were the who decided to go where no man had gone before. Dear me! What are you going to do?

Alright, I’ll help you out, but only this time. Why don’t you solve a little challenge for me and we’ll get you back to the base, no strings attached!

Challenge: Solve the challenge (the challenge itself will be a blank screen with a button in the middle, clicking on which will solve the challenge)

Reward(s): +1 to Two random Stats

You wake up back in the craft, your mind hazy and your memories of the past few hours a blur. You find the hand-nav, lying on the floor beside you. Picking it up, you notice that it has eighteen percent charge left. You open up your log to check how you came back, and are surprised to see that your last location was somewhere in the middle of the forest. The hand-nav generates a map as you go, as you recall, and hence you can retrace your steps with little difficulty. Except right now there is no evidence of you retracing your steps at all, it’s as though you were teleported straight to the craft!

You go over to the storage unit and retrieve the drone. You must first configure it before it can start flying.

Challenge: Configure Drone

Reward(s): +1 Software

You go outside to find that night has arrived, and that you’ll have to wait till tomorrow to send out the drone.

You look up to see the night sky, to take in the stars you were travelling among just some hours ago. It’s beautiful, and you decide to sit down and name a few stars. Why not? Quite possibly, you might be the first human to have ever admired them. And for that matter, why don’t you go ahead and think of a name for your future settlement instead?
