On the crossroads of destiny, there came a turn which lead the world down the road of steam engines and catankerous clockwork, down shady lanes soaked with soot and down great establishments powered through gears and quartz.
It's 2020 London, and although many things are similar to our world, most things are not. Vehicles of all measures litter the roads as always, except these are run through the power of steam. The streetlights are lit by electricity produced through the constant motion of gears and clockworks, again powered by steam. The first steam powered computers are just entering reality, with the Imperial College of Steam and Clockwork Applications spearheading the effort.
Not that that means that the world is underdeveloped, far from it. Da Vinci's flying machine is a reality in this world; fashioned from wood but powered by bronze, people might still be using ships to cover the distances between countries, and air-ships may be a leisure of the rich, but flying machines are as common as skateboards.
The mobile phone has been replaced by a contraption of a unique sort, due to which every respectable primary school teaches its students Morse Code. The machine is a miniature morse transmitter, made of bronze set on a wooden base of course, which when connected to a socket built for the purpose, can relay information to any other transmitter connected to the network. These sockets are peppered by the wagonful througout all modern citites and townships, while larger transmitters are used throughout larger distances such as between cities. The world may not be as connected as ours is, but it functions no worse.
Now let's address the most spectacular creation of clockwork, the Golems. These robotic creations are powered by the sheer power of bronze gears and quartz crystals, and the latest models can stay charged for weeks with a single winding. Their intricate designs allow them to do all the tasks which their parallel world brothers running on AI can do, and so much more! There are police golems, maid golems, waiter golems, worker golems, and for the brave of heart the *'Dog Golem 300: Just like a real dog, but you don't have to clean poop no more'*.
This is world without computers, where Information Technology has been replaced by the Art of Clockwork, and where Golem Science is real but Computer Science isn't even a term. Where steam covers the Sun on the mornings, and ash falls with snow in Winter, yet people still live in lavish opulence as well as unfathomable poverty, where men are both joyous at times, and at times sad. In such a world of stark environmental differences, but few interpersonal ones, how will our player be remembered ?
